There are literally hundreds of ways you can fail in any MLM. Most of those will serve as a lesson as you embark on this great profession of Network Marketing. I want to cover with you what I consider the top 10 reasons why new representatives fail in their MLM.
1. Don't start your names list: This list doesn't have to consist of friends and family members only. It has to be of everyone you've came in contact with in your life granted you have their contact information. It's people that you can call on that recognize your voice. I call it the "living list" because it should always be growing in number of names on it as you live through your day – to – day operation. People will get on that list and get off the list as fast/slow as you go through it. This list doesn't live in your head, on your blackberry, blueberry, crackberry or your iPhone. It's ON PAPER. I've worked with hundreds of reps personally where they refused to make a list because (you name an excuse I've heard it). Guess how many of those hundreds of people made any money worth mentioning? NONE! A "top notch caliber" list of individuals that you want to speak to that resides in your head is not a list. It's as simple as that.
2. Ignore your warm market: This one really makes me laugh. Believe it or not this is not the same as Not Making Your List. The list can be comprised of contacts that you barely know, without your warm market (friends and family) but have their contact information, i.e. realtors, accountants, attorneys, mortgage bankers, sales people, etc.
"Do I have to talk to people that I know about this?" Are you kidding me??? Understand one thing, when a rep tells me they dont want to let their family and friends know about their new business that tells me that the rep plants a seed of failure in the back of their head. This way they won't have to hear from their loved ones "I told you that thing won't work!". There is a nice way to expose your warm market and then there is "fire hosing". Letting people know what you're working on doesn't mean making them sign up with you or throwing up your opportunity all over their face.
3. Internet Marketing/Lead Generation Frenzy: The fact that you're reading this via my blog doesn't mean I don't do business offline. Internet Marketing is something I'm very passionate about but it has it's place in the MLM space. For a new person to dive in to the world of Online Marketing without tapping into their warm market means only one thing; slow and painful results. A new rep wants to make money fast and duplicate their results fast. That most likely won't be accomplished on the Internet. Can it happen? Of course, but most likely it won't. Doing business online takes time, patience and resources. Internet Marketing should NOT be confused with Network Marketing. Internet Marketing, if wisely used, can help and catapult your Network Marketing business over time.
4. Paralysis by Over Analysis: Reading ALL the training material, attending each conference call, reading policies and procedure document, organizing your desk, alphabetizing your names list and doing other things for the sake of "proper information" before making a single phone call to prospect or to acquire a customer. While you do all these things, another excited rep is recruiting, teaching and selling a product. What would you rather have, a neat desk or money in the bank with a story your created that will pretty much handle any objection? I love the old saying "Ignorance on fire is better than knowledge on ice".
5. Don't utilize 3 way calls: Trying to build this business on your own is like adding more road blocks to your path of success. Whether it's your upline, upline's upline, sideline or downline, always use 3rd party validation. There is a psychological factor that helps you convert that prospect into a team member. 3 way calls are the ultimate leverage when closing or prospecting for new business. Doesn't matter how knowledgeable you are, it's not about you but about your prospect. They have to know that they can do this business too.
6. Don't be coachable/teachable: Regardless of your past success, this business requires skills, personal development and duplication in order to call it a success. Always be open to new ideas. You don't know what you don't know.
7. Do not attend events: Whether is a live local event, regional or national function with your company you need to stay plugged in. Conference calls or webinars are no exception. Your business goes through ups and downs, more downs especially when you're new. Staying close to the fire will keep you warm, and that fire is always at live events. By not attending events is one of the sure ways to fail in your MLM.
8. Taking advice from your uncle "Bob": "Uncle Bob" who never built a team in MLM or your next door neighboor who did Amway 37 years ago and quit are not your best advisers. They may mean well but do they know well? Find mentors who have what you want so they can teach you to do the things necessary to succeed.
9. Greener pastures within MLM: Attempting to build another team with another MLM while building a team in your existing company is pure MLM suicide in the long run. "Income diversification" is what they call it. You know what the professionals call "them"? MLM junkies. And we all know what happens to the junkies. It's hard enough to build and sustain one team into the 6 or 7 figures but building 2 or more? C'mon, name one person who successfully built 2 or more companies simultaneously into the 6 or 7 figure mark? Stay focused with ONE.
10. Manage your new reps: So you enrolled your 1st and/or 2nd rep now what? Manage them?! That is the worse thing you can do to them and your business. I know 5 and 6 figure monthly earners that are still personally sponsoring. Yes, they do spend more time with the team now but personal recruiting never stops. You never want to slip into the management mode, EVER!
These are the top 10 sure ways to fail in any MLM when you're brand new. Make sure you don't commit any of these MLM crimes if you want to be successful in this profession.
